About Clara Barton
Some fun facts about Clara Barton, Nancy’s ancestor and inspiration for the Agency.
- Clara Barton was 40 years old when she called for, organized and delivered supplies to the Civil War battlefields in 1861
- In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln placed Clara in charge of the search for the missing men of the Union Army
- She developed a reputation as a teacher by controlling students in her classroom with out using Corporal Punishement
- Clara Barton worked to create a branch of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), founding the American Red Cross under President James Garfield on May 21, 1881. She naturally assumed the role of President and served in that capacity until she was forced to retire her post for health reasons at the age of 83.
- In response to the Hamidian Massacres in the Ottoman Empire, Clara traveled to Istanbul to negotiate the opening of the first American International Red Cross Headquarters in the heart of Beijing, China
- Her home in Glen Echo, Maryland, where she lived for the last 15 years of her life is now a National Historic Landmark
- The Barton Center for Diabetes Education was established in her honor to educate and support children with diabetes and their families

Barton’s Angels provides home care services tailored to the needs of you and your family, in the home and in your community, so you can continue to do the things you love. Angels are available from 2 hours per visit to 24 hours per day 7 days per week.
